Johnson and Phillips Electrical junction box

with integral lighting column and GLS lantern

An oddity, but nonetheless an amazing survivor in 2007 is this Johnson and Phillips cast iron electrical junction box with its very own integral street lighting column. Seemingly saved by the fact that it forms part of someone's garden wall, this corroding cast iron antiquity can be found on the B6034, Swinecote Road in the mining town of Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire.

Left: The ornate bracket and austere industrial type lantern are of an unknown manufacture, but are unlikely to be made by Johnson and Phillips. Right: This closer view reveals a rather crude steel column that has been pre-fabricated and then bolted to the top of the existing junction box; most likely a later addition that has been made and fitted by a former lighting department or power supply company of years gone by? The access door to this large cast-iron housing appears to be on the 'Garden' side of the box!

The makers name 'Johnson and Phillips Ltd Electrical Engineers, London' is cast into the junction box's side panel.

Pictured against a blue but cold February sky, this rusting relic is surely deserving of a lick of gloss green paint!
